The rules of Mongol Rally are simple: find yourself a vehicle of an improbable nature, and drive it to Mongolia.

This is approached by either taking a post-2001 sub-1200cc vehicle of any sort, or finding a vehicle with intrinsic service value. The 1200cc option was ruled out by one major factor, we're Americans. As Americans we like 'em big. This meant of the vehicles that qualify for the rally, that only two were available in the US, the Honda Insight and the Smart Fortwo. Both of these vehicle, likely impart do to their fringe status, hold very impressive residual values, and so priced themselves out of our range. Our only option left was to find a service vehicle.

After looking at options as varied as bucket vans and taco truck, an Ambulance seemed like a logical choice. Next was to decide upon the type of ambulance. In the US, most ambulances fall into one of four categories: type I, type II, type III, and medium duty. Medium duty rigs were ruled out because they're beasts with consumption measured in integer values of gallons per mile. Type II was push aside because their "vanbulances," and seriously, who wants to drive through hostile terrain in a thing called a vanbulance? Type IIIs (van based chassis rigs) were a possibility, but we eventually decided upon type I (truck based chassis rigs) as the optimum choice. Type I provide the easiest access to the engine bay, which will be important when something inevitably goes wrong.
